Puerto Rico

The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is today an unincorporated territory of the United States governed by an independent republican government. The head of state, however, is the President of the United States of America. Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain to the United States during the Spanish-American war and Puerto Ricans have been granted US citizenship since 1917. The capital San Juan lies directly on the coast of the archipelago and was the embarkment harbor for a cruise we took over Thanksgiving 2008.

Puerto Rico has a similar independence from the United States like an actual state but with limited representation in the US Senate and House of representatives. It has been an ongoing discussion for Puerto Ricans if they wish to join the United States as the 51st state.
