Wapakoneta
Wapakoneta was my very first encounter with America back in the year 1995 when my home town Lengerich initiated a sister city program with the city of Wapakoneta. The trip was exciting and we were greatly welcome and treated like kings. Our local music school orchestra (which I was a member of at the piano) played some music - both German, American, and international - which helped to get in better contact and communication. My host family was very nice and integrated my German roommate and me fully in their family. I'm still occasionally in contact with them. As Wapakoneta is not such a big town, the event of a sister city act was quite a big deal and a lot of the citizens were there to watch and celebrate the ceremony - something that would probably not have happened that way in Germany. That was one of the first things I realized about Americans - they are proud of their nation and show that (well, maybe Germany is a special case considering our history, but I think we should get over that in order to give the future a better chance).
